A new entry in the “Insidious” franchise is slated for theaters. The next installment of the Blumhouse Productions horror series, co-produced by Screen Gems, is scheduled for release on AUGUST 29, 2025, as announced by Sony.
Details about the project remain under wraps, including whether franchise regulars like Patrick Wilson and Leigh Whannell will return. This newly announced film is separate from “Thread: An Insidious Tale,” a spin-off first reported by Deadline in May 2023, which stars Mandy Moore and Kumail Nanjiani with Jeremy Slater as writer and director.
Assuming no other “Insidious” films are released before this one, it will be the sixth entry in the franchise and the first since last year’s “Insidious: The Red Door.” That fifth film featured Patrick Wilson and Ty Simpkins returning to their roles, with Wilson also making his directorial debut. “The Red Door” performed well at the summer box office, grossing $82 million domestically and $189 million worldwide on a modest $16 million budget.
Since the franchise’s inception in 2010 under director James Wan, “Insidious” has grossed over $730 million globally. Despite switching distributors from FilmDistrict to Focus Features, Universal, and now Sony, Jason Blum’s Blumhouse Productions has consistently co-produced each installment. Screen Gems returns as a co-producer after joining for “Insidious: The Red Door.”
Before the release of “The Red Door,” Jason Blum hinted at a lengthy hiatus for the series, suggesting that the fifth film would be the last for a while. He noted, “It may not be a forever rest, but it’s certainly going to be a very long rest. … There’s no current plan in place for number six.” If Sony’s new date holds, the hiatus will have lasted just 25 months.
